Teemu Riihijärvi (born March 1, 1977 in Espoo ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player . During his career he played between 1993 and 2006 in the Finnish SM-liiga for Espoo Blues , Lukko Rauma , Pelicans Lahti and SaiPa Lapeenranta and for Södertälje SK in the Swedish Elitserien .

Career

Riihijärvi played his first games in 1993 at the age of 16 with the Espoo Blues in the top Finnish league, the SM-liiga . In 1995 he took part in the U18 European Junior Championship in 1995 and won the gold medal. Due to his great talent at the time, the San Jose Sharks selected him after two seasons in Finland at the age of 18 in the first round in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in 12th position, but the Finn initially played with the Blues until 1997. In the following seasons he moved within the Finnish league several times and played until the end of the 2002/03 season for Lukko Rauma , the Pelicans Lahti and SaiPa Lapeenranta .

Before the 2003/04 season Riihijärvi signed a two-year contract with the Swedish Elitserienklub Södertälje SK . After the contract expired, he returned to Finland to his home club, the Espoo Blues. There he ended his 13-year professional career after the 2005/06 season . Despite his early selection in the NHL Entry Draft, Riihijärvi never played a game in the National Hockey League .
