Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were an American no-wave band from New York. It existed from 1976 to 1979.

history

The band was founded in 1976 by the then sixteen-year-old Lydia Lunch and James Chance as well as Reck and Bradley Field , but Chance left the group very quickly and founded the Contortions . Teenage Jesus remained a trio, headed for lunch. Reck left the band in 1978 and went back to Japan. He was later followed by Jim Sclavunos and Gordon Stevenson as bassist. In 1978 they were one of four bands selected by Brian Eno for the " No New York " sampler, the central document of No Wave. In addition to the four tracks on this, the band only released two singles and two short maxi singles . In 1979 Lunch broke up the band. In 2008 there was a reunion for performances in London and New York, and in 2009 the band toured Europe.

Many of the members remained active musicians, James Chance, who first founded the Contortions, and Lydia Lunch began successful solo careers. Reck founded the influential no-wave band Friction in Japan , Jim Sclavunos played among others, with Lunch at 8 Eyed Spy , at the Cramps , Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Vanity Set .

plant

Her entire oeuvre (including some pieces published for the first time in 2008) comprises no more than 15 different pieces with a total running time of around 20 minutes, and live performances rarely lasted longer than 10 minutes. Lunch played slide guitar , but left all the strings open, so she didn't pick any chords , her singing was usually extremely loud screaming. The pieces were completely rhythmic, with a length of less than 30 seconds often extremely short.

Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were one of the most important bands of the no wave and particularly influenced subsequent New York bands like Sonic Youth .
