Persian shops in Tehrangeles

Tehrangeles ( Persian تهرانجلس) is a suitcase word that is composed of Tehran and Angeles. It usually refers to the large community of Iranian exiles in the greater Los Angeles in California . With at least 500,000 people of Iranian descent, the largest Persian community abroad lives there.

The Iranian community originally focused on the Westwood neighborhood . Since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, the number of Iranian emigrants in Los Angeles has increased sharply, so that people of Persian descent are now scattered across the entire city. The Greater Los Angeles area also has several of its own Persian-language newspapers and radio stations.

A large concentration of Iranian shops and stores can still be found between Westwood Boulevard , Pico Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard . A large part of the inhabitants there are of Iranian descent and the cityscape is partly characterized by Persian-language billboards. This district is also known as Little Persia , but the word Tehrangeles is often used as a synonym for this Persian neighborhood. The district is now officially recognized as "Persian Square" by the Los Angeles city council.
