Tehri Garhwal was one of the princely states of British India at the foot of the Himalayas in what is now the state of Uttarakhand . The Hindu Principality of Garhwal existed since 823. In 1791 it became a protectorate of Nepal and in 1804 it was annexed by the Nepalese . The expelled Raja Sudarshan Shah obtained help from the British in 1812 and was installed as ruler of Tehri Garhwal in 1815. Raja Narendra Shah (1913-46) was promoted to Maharaja . Tehri Garhwal was a British protectorate until 1947 and was initially under the supervision of the Governor of the North-Western or United Provinces and came to the Punjab States Agency in 1936 .

In 1941 the country had an area of ​​11,655 km² and 540,000 inhabitants. The Maharaja Manabendra Shah joined the Punjab Hill States in May 1949 and joined India on August 1, 1949 (see History of India ), with Tehri Garhwal being incorporated into the state of Uttar Pradesh as a district. On November 1, 1956, the princely state was abolished. Since 2000 the area belongs to the new state of Uttarakhand. Manabendra Shah went into politics and was a member of the Indian Parliament for many years and ambassador to Ireland from 1980–83.
