history

The old town of Tehri was at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers . Tehri was for a time the capital of the princely state of Tehri Garhwal in British India . It bordered the Garhwal region , and its topographical features are similar. It contained the sources of the Ganges and the Yamuna , which are visited by thousands of Hindu pilgrims. In the 18th century, the ships of the East India Company called at what was then the port city.

With the construction of the Tehri Dam , the old town of Tehri was completely destroyed and the population was relocated to the newly built town of New Tehri. The city is known as the site of protests by Sundarlal Bahuguna and his supporters during the Chipko movement against the construction of the dam.
