The Tektek Mountains (German: Tektek mountains or -Gebirge ) are a rocky hillside in northern Mesopotamia , between the Euphrates and Tigris , in the Turkish province of Sanliurfa . For the most part it is a stone desert .

description

The Tektek Mountains lie between the Harran plain in the west and that of Viranşehir in the east. In the north lies the Şanlıurfa plateau (Şanlıurfa Platosu), in the south, across the Syrian border, the Jazira region joins. The area measures about 50 kilometers in north-south direction and 30 kilometers in east-west direction, and the altitude is between 600 and 800 meters.

The landscape consists of Eocene and Miocene limestone, its valleys were created by erosion in the humid climate of the interglacial and postglacial periods. It is extremely arid and shows extremely sparse vegetation, apart from a few meadows, only pistachio trees grow in the extreme northwest . On the other hand, it is known for its abundance of game, as animals often retreat to the deserted area, and popular as a hunting area. The inhabitants are predominantly Kurds and Arabs and mostly live from cattle breeding (mainly sheep). In autumn, nomads from Karacadağ north of Şanlıurfa migrate to the Tektek Mountains to winter.

Culture

In the Tektek Dağları are the archaeological sites of Karahan Tepe, Sumatar and Şuayipşehri. Karahan Tepe is an early Stone Age settlement hill, Sumatar is an ancient city from the 2nd century AD and probably a cult place of the Sabians , and Roman ruins can be seen in Şuayipşehri. The latter is also considered the hometown of the Prophet Jethro ( Şuayip in Turkish ). In 1913, the German orientalist Max von Oppenheim toured the mountains and took photographs of caves and landscapes.

Since 2007 the area is the Tektek Dağları Turkish National Park (Tek Tek Dağları Milli Parkı)
