The television program was introduced to ensure that school attendance was compulsory for 6 years across the country. This offered the 5th and 6th grade in the remote rural areas of Portugal and at the same time kept the tuition costs low. For a long time it was customary in Portugal to only complete compulsory schooling for 4 years, and it was only after the Second World War that adequate educational opportunities were pursued across the board. The project was supposed to supply both the underserved rural areas and the suburbs of the growing cities, where not all pupils could be accepted into regular school after primary school due to overcrowded schools.

The program has been broadcast on state television RTP since it was first broadcast on January 6, 1965, and has been shown in private or public common rooms. Groups of students were able to follow the lesson with the help of a mentor . The program was broadcast from Monday to Friday for around 5 hours in the afternoon.

The daily Telescola was largely discontinued by the end of 1987, after which the sharply reduced demand was covered by VHS video cassettes from 1988 until the service was completely discontinued in 2004. After that, the RTP repeated broadcasts of some themed subjects in the Telescola in the morning program of its second channel, later the newly created repeat channel RTP Memória.
