Tenka-goken

The tenka-goken ( Japanese 天下 五 剣 , dt. "Five [best] swords under the sky") are five famous Japanese swords that have been grouped under this name since the Muromachi period . The swords were all made before the Kamakura period . These swords include:

  1. Dōjigiri ( 童子 切 ), tachi shape, length 79.9 cm, curvature 2.7 cm, forged by Hōki-no-Kuni Yasutsuna ( 伯 耆 国 安 綱 ) (real name: Yokose Saburōdayū ( 横 瀬 三郎 太 夫 )), national treasure of Japan kept in the Tokyo National Museum . It is with this sword that Minamoto no Yorimitsu allegedly killed the demon Shuten-dōji .
  2. Onimaru ( 鬼 丸 ), tachi shape, length 78.2 cm, curvature 3.2 cm, forged by Awataguchi Sakon-no-Shōgen Kunitsuna ( 粟 田 口 左近 将 監 国 綱 ), owned by the Japanese imperial family ; With this sword, Hōjō Tokiyori allegedly got rid of a demon.
  3. Mikazuki ( 三 日月 ), tachi shape, length 80 cm, curvature 2.7 cm, crescent moon shape, forged by Sanjō Kokaji Munechika, national treasure, kept in the Tokyo National Museum
  4. Ōdenta ( 大典 太 ), tachi shape, length 66.1 cm, curvature 2.7 cm, forged by Miike Denta Mitsuyo ( 三 池 典 太 光 世 ), national treasure of Japan. Heirloom of the Ashikaga shoguns , kept by the Maeda Ikutokukai
  5. Juzumaru ( 数 珠 丸 ), tachi shape, length 81.1 cm, curvature 3.0 cm, forged by Aoe Tsunetsugu ( 青 江恒 次 ), important cultural asset of Japan . Said to have heard of Nichiren wearing a rosary around the hilt of his sword.
