Carpet cleaner (device)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A carpet cleaner is a household appliance used to clean carpets . It can be connected to a vacuum cleaner , an independent electrical device or it can be purely mechanical.

Electrical appliances

Electric carpet cleaners have a tank for carpet cleaning fluid . It forms the carpet foam through the rolling of the brushes. The brushes can be adapted to the type of carpet. A coarse, short-bristled brush system is recommended for hard carpets. With soft, thick carpets, fine, long brush hair is useful. The foam is rubbed into the carpet and has to be completely absorbed and dry there.

Carpet sweeper

Carpet sweepers , also known colloquially as carpet dachshunds , are mechanical carpet sweeping devices that have modernized the principle of carpet knockers in a more efficient way using rotating brushes in a box on rollers.

The carpet sweeper was developed by the American pottery dealer and inventor Melville R. Bissell and a patent was applied for on September 19, 1876. He got the idea because he kept knocking sawdust out of the carpets in his business premises. At first he only made a prototype for his own use. With this device it was possible for the first time to clean a carpet relatively thoroughly, even when lying down on site. When more and more people asked where you could buy such a device, he began series production of the device. With the spread of the device, the verb to bissell also found its way into the English language. Queen Victoria insisted that her palace be "bitten" weekly. The Leifheit- Rotaro from 1960 , which works according to the same principle, was widely used in Germany .

The carpet sweeper is therefore the forerunner of today in virtually every household contained vacuum cleaners , but in contrast to the carpet sweeper current need, be it from a wall outlet or a battery .

In the absence of a large-volume collection container , it takes more time to clean larger areas, as the Dachshund carpet (limited volume of the dust collection area) has to be emptied more frequently. Furthermore, the cleaning performance is inherently lower than that of vacuum cleaners. The carpet dachshund's weaknesses can be seen in the corners, where dirt can remain despite rotating brushes, and when cornering furniture legs.
