Maria Teresa Vaz Torrão Lago (born January 18, 1947 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese astronomer.

Life

Teresa Lago was born in Lisbon in 1947 and lived in Angola from 1948 to 1965 . In 1971 she graduated from the University of Porto . She then studied at the University of Sussex , where she received her Master of Science degree in 1975 and her PhD in Astronomy in 1979.

She became a professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Porto and in 1988 she became the founder and first director of the Center for Astrophysics at the University of Porto (Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto), which she remained until 2006.

Teresa Lago is active in science policy on a national and international level and was a member of various bodies such as the Space Science Advisory Committee of ESA or the ESO Council. In 2006 she was one of the founding members of the European Research Council . She was committed to a cooperation agreement between Portugal and the ESO , which was concluded in 1990 and led to the country joining the ESO in 2000. She is Secretary General of the International Astronomical Union from 2018 to 2021 .

In her research, Teresa Lago mainly dealt with star formation , T-Tauri stars and young star clusters .
