Tereza Campello

Tereza Helena Gabrielli Barreto Campello (born August 12, 1962 in Descalvado , state of São Paulo ) is a Brazilian economist and politician of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). She was a member of Dilma Rousseff's First and Second Cabinet as Minister for Social Development and Fight Against Hunger .

Life

Campello grew up in the interior of the state of São Paulo. She graduated in Economics from the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU) in Minas Gerais .

Her political career began in Rio Grande do Sul , where she married Paulo Ferreira, party functionary of the Labor Party of Rio Grande do Sul. From 1989 she worked for the former prefects of Porto Alegre Raul Pont and Tarso Genro . She took over a post in the government office of Governor Olívio Dutra and from 2002 helped Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to develop the social welfare program Bolsa Família .

After her election as President, Dilma Rousseff appointed Campello to succeed Márcia Lopes as Minister for Social Development and Fight Against Hunger.

In September 2014, she lodged a complaint against a report by the Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU, Federal Audit Office), which criticized the effectiveness of the implementation of the MDS social programs, even though around 36 million of the extremely poor had already received subsistence assistance.

She held the ministerial office from January 1, 2011 to May 12, 2016. Her successor in the cabinet of Interim President Michel Temer was the Federal MP for Rio Grande do Sul Osmar Terra of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB).
