Terry & the Hot Sox is a Swiss rock'n'roll formation.

Band history

Terry & the Hot Sox was founded in 1980. The band plays rock'n'roll and is one of the most successful Swiss groups in this type of music.

Band formation

In 1979 the main initiator and guitarist Carlo Milan played with the Keizer Twins. (Drummer Walter and bassist Peter Keizer) in the jazz rock septet "Shivananda" Although this band was very successful across Europe, the three musicians wanted to change their music. Together with guitarist Thomas Kübler and pianist Robi “Blues” Müller they founded a rock'n'roll combo. The singer was Walter Terry Senn, a skiffle, rock'n'roll, rhythm'n'blues & country interpreter. It was the time when a young, "discomfortable" generation began to be enthusiastic about punk, new wave & rockabilly sounds.

First appearances and first record deal

In 1981 the first album "Rock'n'Roll" (CBS today Sony Music) was released. Most of the recordings were still classic rock'n'roll standards. Carlo Milan and the "Keizer Twins" who played for the first six years were in demand as session musicians. In 1981 the group starred in four TV shows and in 1982 took part in the Openair-St. Gallen.

First single successes, second album and awards

Terry & the Hot Sox reached the CH hit parade placements in 1982 with the single "Hamburg". In 1983 the second album "Shake Well" (CBS) was released with almost exclusively its own material. The British saxophonist Alan "Solly" Solomon, who had already played as a guest musician on the first album, was now a permanent member. Thanks to the single »Chick-A-Little Cutie«, which became a long-running radio airplay, the septet received the »Bronzenen Hammerschlumpf« award from the pop music magazine »POP / ROCKY« in January 1984 as the third most popular CH pop group . This was followed by TV shows in Germany and appearances in France and Holland.

Line-up and third album (1986–1989)

In 1986 the Keizer twins left the band and were replaced by bassist Heinz Krapf, drummer Roger "Gonzo" Zirn and pianist Dave Ruosch. In this formation, the "Hot Sox" recorded their third work in 1989, "Real Rock Drive" (K-tel Switzerland).

Line-up and new single success (1990-1999)

In 1990, drummer Reto Spörli and guitarist Jens Krüger (today "Krüger-Brothers") switched to Terry & the Hot Sox and in 1991 produced one with the Swiss 700th anniversary contribution "Daddy Tell" (Wilhelm Tell Twist) (K-tel Switzerland) another hit. The 1990s were marked by festival appearances with many old masters of rock'n'roll such as Chuck Berry , Jerry Lee Lewis , Fats Domino , Little Richard and Carl Perkins .

Line-up and fourth album (2000-2017)

In the late 1990s / early 2000, the English guitarist Duncan James, drummer Martin Meyer, pianist Chris Conz and the Danish lead & background singer Etta Kin joined them. Together with bassist Heinz Krapf, saxophonist Alan “Solly” Solomon and lead singer Terry (the last two of the original formation) and the guest musicians Martin “Sägi” Sägesser (“QL”), Dave Ruosch (ex-Hot Sox) and the Pedal Steel Guitarist Sarah Jory (UK) (Royal Philharmonic, Van Morrison Band, Cyndi Lauper Band etc.) recorded the fourth album by Terry & the Hot Sox. This work was published in January 2018, is called »From Schwamendingen to Broadway« and contains many self-written songs, a rockabilly version of the Bee Gees number »Nights On Broadway« and a humorous rock'n'roll rattle in the so-called »Züri -Schnurre-Slang "with the title" Chumm loses no word mee "! This song is dedicated to the Zurich district of Schwamendingen , where Terry grew up and made his first appearances in 1961.
