Teruo Higa

Teruo Higa ( Japanese 比 嘉 照 夫 Higa Teruo ; born December 28, 1941 in Okinawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese professor of horticulture .

Higa was born and raised in the Ryūkyū Islands . He graduated from the Agricultural Faculty of the State University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa Prefecture, and received his PhD from the Agricultural Research Department of the State Kyushu University . In 1970 he became a lecturer and in 1972 associate professor at Ryūkyū University . In 1982 he took over his current professorship for horticulture at the Agricultural Faculty of Ryūkyū University.

He is the inventor of the so-called Effective Microorganisms (EM) and spends almost half of the year abroad in order to spread EM technology in agriculture and other areas in other countries .

Higa holds the following positions:

  • Chairman of the Executive Committee for the International Expansion of Natural Agriculture
  • President of the Asia-Pacific Natural Agriculture Network (APNAN)
  • Executive Director of the Foundation for Earth Environment
  • Technical advisor to the Flower Association in Japan
  • Director of the International Research Center for Natural Agriculture
