Tetraalkylammonium salts
Tetraalkylammonium salts belong to the group of organic salts and are quaternary ammonium compounds of the type R 4 N + X - , in which R is an alkyl radical .
Manufacturing
They arise from the implementation of trialkylamines with reactive haloalkanes , such as. B. methyl iodide . So z. B. through the reaction of trimethylamine with methyl iodide, tetramethylammonium iodide :
use
Tetrabutyl, tetrethyl and tetramethylammonium salts are used as solubilizers in phase transfer catalysis and as conductive salts [example: tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (NBu 4 PF 6 )] in voltammetry . Some long-chain tetraalkylammonium salts are invert soaps .
