Devil's fountain

The Teufelsbrünnlein is a Nuremberg fountain. Its name refers to the fountain scene, which depicts a dragon and a devil who is about to seize a schoolboy.

Origin and location

Detail dragon

The fountain is on the north tower of the Lorenz Church . It was built in 1888 based on a design by Friedrich Wanderer .

The little fountain in detail

The devil's fountain is made of sandstone . The square fountain basin has a swivel spout and is surrounded by a protective grille. On the back wall of the fountain basin and directly adjacent to the church wall, there is a relief with the coat of arms of the city of Nuremberg and the rust of St. Laurentius . The relief merges into a neo-Gothic round pillar which ends in a pinnacle . On the side slopes, which mark the transition from relief to round column and are also interpreted as a stylistically suggested roof, the dragon is on the right and the devil with the schoolboy on the left.

legend

Detail devil

According to legend, the school boy in the fountain scene is said to have been a hot-headed " Schusserbou " (shot boy, marble player). After school he used to shoot regularly with his schoolmates in the school yard on Lorenzer Platz, that is, to play marbles . He cheated how it went and just occurred to him. When he was approached by his friends about it, he denied any cheating and confirmed his innocence with the words: "If it's not true, the devil should take me!", Whereupon the incarnate man drove down and took the boy away with him. The Schusserbou is said to have lost his cap during the flight. This was then caught by the lightning rod of the choir roof of the Lorenz Church and gave the sheet metal knob located there the nickname "Lausbubenkäpple".
