Devil's castle

The remains of a medieval hilltop castle above the west bank of the Große Bockau about 750 m south of Blauenthal in the Ore Mountains are called Teufelsschloss or Blauenthal's ring wall . The facility existed from around the end of the 12th century to around 1400.

description

The name Ringwall von Blauenthal is incorrect. Based on archaeological excavations, the oval structure was about 55 meters long and 30 meters wide. In the middle, on mostly grown rock, was the slightly raised core structure. Because of this, the complex can be counted among the spur castles. The name Teufelsschloss was probably coined by the vernacular.

The core plant is steeply sloped and has a long oval plateau approx. 40 meters long and up to 12 meters wide. A tower-like structure can be assumed as the central point here. The bottom of the trench below the plateau is up to 8 meters lower than this. On the south side, the trench is up to 4 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep, carved into the rock.

The location was rediscovered in 1924 by Kommerzienrat Toelle, a paper manufacturer in Blauenthal. The first excavations were carried out in 1925. In the course of this, potsherds were found, which were considered to be evidence of a prehistoric settlement. This may be in connection with the state expansion in the 12th / 13th centuries. Century, when it penetrated into the ridges of the Ore Mountains. Further discoveries were made in 1985 when several trees were uprooted as a result of a windbreak . In addition to shards, an iron ax and clay figures were found on the open areas.

present

The weir system was first placed under protection as a ground monument in 1935 and again in 1959. A plaque on the site indicates the history of the place.
