Tewai-Siassi is a district in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea .
Geography and economics
The district includes both the north coast of the Huon Peninsula and the islands of Umboi , Tolokiwa , Sakar , Malai and Tuam . The largest island by far is Umboi with 777 km². The main town on the island is Siassi . There are active volcanoes on the 34 km² Sakar and on Tolokiwa. They belong to the belt of active volcanoes that stretches from New Britain along the north coast of New Guinea .
The main towns of Tewai-Siassi are Sialum and Wasu . Sialum is connected to Finschhafen by a road that can be used in dry conditions. The district is otherwise hardly accessible by traffic routes. There are a few small landing strips and the coastal areas can be reached by private outboard motor boats. With the exception of a few coastal strips of Umboi, the agricultural potential of the district is low.

The Austronesian languages Lukep and Arop-Lokep (also Siassi, Tolokiwa, Moromiranga) are spoken in Tolokiwa and Umboi, Mbula in Sakar and Umboi and Tuam-Mutu in Mandok, Malai, Aronai, Tuam, Mutu Malau, Aramot and Umboi, and the trans New Guinea language Kovai on Umboi. Traditional religion still has a firm place among the Kovai . At the 2011 census , the population was 54,340. The population density on Malai and Tuam is among the highest in Papua New Guinea at over 400 people per square kilometer, which leads to considerable population pressure. The average per capita income in 2000 was around 20 kina (5 euros).
