Coma i Cros textile factory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company Comma i Cros was one of the most important textile companies in the Girona region , based in Salt . The premises of the former Coma i Cros textile factory will be used by the ERAM College after the renovation .

Due to the good location on the river Ter and the possibility of using water power , the company Llach, Portabella and Co. began building a textile factory in Salt in 1850. The steady expansion of the textile factory was interrupted between 1861 and 1865 by the effects of the American Civil War , which caused a severe crisis in the textile industry due to the shortage of cotton . Between 1909 and 1912, Joan de Coma i Cros acquired all of the textile factories in Salt. Thus began the process of reorganizing the industrial structure in the city of Salt. Until 1920, the entire production was concentrated in one location, the former Coma i Cros textile factory.

The textile factory Coma i Cros was run by a workers' committee during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) . The textile factory was  renamed to the name of Kropotkin in memory of Pyotr Alexejewitsch Kropotkin  - one of the most important theorists of the anarchist movement . During this time, weapons and bombs for the second Spanish republic were also produced in part of the plant . With the end of the Spanish Civil War, the former owner returned and tried to remove all traces of anarcho-syndicalism , such as the painting by Kropotkin in one of the wings of the work. The black color of Kropotkin's painting shimmered through even after being repainted several times, so that the name Kropotkin was removed with rasps. The name was engraved into the stone of the factory hall so that the name Kropotkin is still clearly legible.
