The Teylers Stichting (German: Teylers Foundation ) is a Dutch foundation for social and scientific purposes.

history

It was founded on the legacy of the Haarlem cloth and silk merchant, banker and philanthropist Pieter Teyler van der Hulst in the 18th century . The order was "the ondersteuning van behoeftigen en ter aanmoediging van godsdienst, wetenschap en kunst" (German: "to support the needy and to promote religion, science and art"). When Teyler van der Hulst died in 1778, he was without children or close family. He determined in his last will how the inheritance should be used. He left money for various people, the church and also for the aforementioned charitable purposes. Alleged family members have claimed that Teyler's will should only last 100 years and that any remaining money should be returned to family members. Such claims were not recognized by any court. The foundation was established by five friends of Teyler who were his executors and also the foundation's first directors (board members).

Tax and works

The foundation is managed by a board of directors with five directors who are appointed by the other board members. The first five directors were Teyler's friends:

The directors met in the Grote Herenkamer (Large master bedroom ) in the Teylers Fundatiehuis (Foundation House), a room next to the oval room of the Teylers Museum . The current directors are:

  • JR Beets-Hehewerth
  • JJ van Es
  • JE Trip (Treasurer)
  • RAM van Voorst van Beest-Gunst, secretary
  • CGA van Wijk, chairman

The foundation was responsible for the Teylers Museum, the Teylers Hofje (Teylers poor house) and the two societies Teylers Eerste Genootschap (Teylers First Society), which focuses on theological issues, and Teylers Tweede Genootschap (Teylers Second Society), which deals with scientific issues employed. The foundation is also responsible for the Teylers chair at Leiden University .

The management of the museum was left to a Kastelein and later to the museum director (not to be confused with the foundation directors). In 1981, the management of the museum was transferred to a separate foundation ( Stichting tot Beheer en repair van Teylers Museum , Foundation for the management and maintenance of the Teylers Museum) in accordance with a request from the national authority. The authority then recognized the museum as a museum of national importance and was therefore able to subsidize it. Teylers Stichting appoints two of the six supervisory board members of the new foundation. The Teylers Stichting also owns the buildings. As already determined in the will, the Teylers Stichting has its seat in the Fundatiehuis.

archive

The complete archive of the Stichting is still intact and available. The early years (1778–1827) in the archive have been digitized and are available online on the museum's website. This includes the meeting minutes of the board of directors and the receipts for materials and museum pieces that were purchased. From this evidence one can reconstruct the activities of the Teylers Stichting in the past.
