Théophile-Rémy Frêne
Théophile-Rémy Frêne (born June 17, 1727 in Orvin , † June 15, 1804 in Tavannes ) was a Reformed pastor and scholar in Switzerland.
After studying theology at the high school in Bern , he was ordained a pastor in May 1745. In 1759 he was deacon of Erguël , in 1760 pastor in Courtelary and in 1763 pastor of Tavannes-Chaindon, where he died in office. His daughter Isabelle married the priest and beekeeper Jonas de Gélieu in 1778 .
As a representative of the Enlightenment, Frêne wrote a treatise against Baruch Spinoza , a refutation of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Discours sur les sciences et les arts and an agronomic work entitled Des Montagnes du Mont Jura . From the German he translated a. a. the complete geography of Johann Huebner .
Frêne was the initiator of the Abrégé de l'histoire et de la statistique du ci-devant évêché de Bâle published by Charles-Ferdinand Morel . Frênes Cléobule ou Pensées diverses d'un pasteur de campagne was also published by Morel .
