Johann Hübner (born March 17, 1668 in Türchau ; † May 21, 1731 in Hamburg ) was a German teacher , author of school books and writer in the fields of genealogy , geography , history , poetics and Protestant religious education in the early days of the Enlightenment .

Life

At the age of 10 or 11, Hübner was given to the old grammar school in Zittau. According to his own admission, he owed a lot to Christian Weise , who had been rector there since 1678 and with whom he also lived for a few years.

From 1689 he studied philosophy , history and Protestant theology in Leipzig . There he received his master's degree in 1691 and gave his own lectures in the subjects of poetics , rhetoric , geography and history. He submitted his dissertation in 1694. In the same year he was appointed rector of the cathedral high school in Merseburg . In 1695 he married Anna Sybilla, a daughter of the Leipzig theology professor Johannes Olearius († 1713), with whom he had three daughters and two sons. From 1711 until his death he was rector of the Johanneum in Hamburg.

In 1719 one of his daughters married the publisher Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch , who published a number of his works. His only surviving son Johannes became a lawyer in Hamburg and worked a. a. New editions of his father's works.

Huebner was a representative of the catechetical teaching method and therefore wrote some of his works in question-answer alternation. His Kurtze Questions from Old and New Geography was the first textbook on geography and paved the way for this subject in the classroom . So it was z. B. also introduced into the teaching of the Francke Foundations and in 1712 the Nicolai School in Leipzig was given a copy of the work by the local council for use in teaching.

Huebner's Conversations Lexicon, title page of the 1759 edition

In his preface to the newspaper lexicon (see below) from 1704, Hübner had expressed the wish that suitable atlases would soon have to be available to supplement reading in newspapers and teaching. He therefore sought cooperation with the Nuremberg cartographer Johann Baptist Homann . The Kleiner Atlas scholasticus of 18 charts published by Homann in 1710 was accommodated by Johann Huebner . In his museum geographicum in 1712 he dealt with the question of how small or large atlases could be made from the maps that had already been printed. The Atlas methodicus… or Methodical Atlas published in 1719 was a result of these efforts and was set up according to the Huebnerian way of teaching .

Hübner became famous for the preface he wrote for the Real State and Newspaper Lexicon published by Gleditsch in 1704 . Since the editor of the lexicon was only mentioned in the 1777 edition, it became known under his name. The work was the first conversation lexicon (so called since 1708) and had 31 editions until 1828. He also wrote a preface for the Curieuse nature-art-trade and action-lexicon compiled by Paul Jacob Marperger in 1712 as a supplement to the conversation lexicon .

In addition, Hübner developed genealogical tables that were widely used and also experienced a number of new editions.

His Biblical Histories , a children's Bible that he put together for use in schools and in home education , found an extraordinary dissemination . He added clear questions, useful teachings, and godly thoughts to the scriptures to help memorize the stories. By 1870 (or 1902) the work had seen over 200 reprints and revisions, as well as translations into fifteen European languages. For almost a century it was one of the most important school textbooks, and not just for religious education . Reprints even appeared in the United States .
