Théophile Tilmant

Théophile Tilmant (born July 9, 1799 in Valenciennes , † May 8, 1878 in Asnières-sur-Seine ) was a French violinist and conductor.

Tilmant was a student of Rodolphe Kreutzer . He was initially an orchestral musician at the Opéra-Comique and the Paris Opera . Between 1827 and 1832 he directed the Orchester du Gymnase musical , and he was also conductor at the Théâtre-Italien . From 1849 to 1868 he was chief conductor of the Opéra-Comique.

Under his direction, Le toréador (1848) and Le Sourd ou l'Auberge Pleine (1853) by Adolphe Adam and Galathée (1852) and Les noces de Jeannette (1853) by Victor Massé were premiered. In 1861 he was honored as a member of the Legion of Honor.
