Thérèse Allah (known as Allah Thérèse ; * 1936 in Gbofia ; † January 19, 2020 in Djékanou ) was an Ivorian singer . She formed a musical duet with her husband, accordionist N'Goran la Loi , until his death on May 20th, 2018 .

Life

Thérèse Allah, better known as Allah Thérèse, was a traditional singer from the village of Gbofia in Toumodi sub-prefecture in central Ivory Coast. She was known for her characteristic hairstyle "Akôrou Koffié" (which means "the spider's wife" in Baule ).

Allah began performing with N'Goran in 1956 and the duo enjoyed great popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. By 2005 the duo had produced six albums together. Their seventh and final album was released on May 21, 2018, one day after N'Goran's death. The album is entitled Bé gnanssou moayé , which in Baule translates as “I had grace”.

She was one of the favorite artists of the first President Félix Houphouët-Boigny (reign 1960–1993). To this end, she took part in several important events such as summits or visits to other heads of state in Ivory Coast.

Allah reflected on her career in an interview in 2018 and stated that she was satisfied with her life's work and her commitment to preserving tradition through music. She explained her absence from the stage in later years, stating that she was no longer able to cope with the demands of a live performance. In the same interview, Allah Thérèse stated that her commitment to music was her legacy, although she lamented the fact that she had no children. “I made a commitment to sing to immortalize my life. I feel happy when my fans call me mom. In my family there are three girls who have never had children. "

Allah declared her intention to retire after the death of her husband on May 20, 2018. She explained that "I can not go on, we are a team, we are a couple, without him I can not go on".

On January 19, 2020, Allah was admitted to Djékanou General Hospital , where she died. Her death was mourned by the Ivorian President Ouattara , who visited her in early December 2019.

Awards and honors

As a pioneer of traditional Ivorian music, Allah was awarded the Knight of the Ivorian Order of Merit (chevalier de l'ordre du Mérite ivoirien) on May 24, 2012. From 2014 she received a monthly pension from the Ivorian state, which also committed to provide her with two residential units.
