Thaddäus Steinmayr

Thaddäus Steinmayr (born July 10, 1921 in Erla im Mostviertel ; † May 1, 2017 ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). From 1969 to 1989 he was mayor of St. Ulrich bei Steyr and from 1973 to 1991 a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament .

Life

Thaddäus Steinmayr worked as a teacher, headed the elementary school in St. Ulrich bei Steyr and was appointed to the high school board .

From 1949 he was an ÖVP councilor in Ortisei near Steyr, where he held the office of mayor from January 17, 1969 to July 5, 1989. On November 16, 1973 he was with the beginning of the XXI. Legislative term as a deputy of the Upper Austrian parliament sworn in , where he served a member of the immunity and incompatibility Committee, was in the Committee on Constitutional and administration, for schools, culture and sport and the first Vice-Chairman of the Audit. It belonged to the Upper Austrian Landtag until the end of the XXIII. Legislative period on October 29, 1991.

In 1976 he wrote a letter to schools all over the world asking for stones to use to build a monument for the peace of the world's youth. Within two months, around 70 stones reached the community, and the peace memorial was opened in 1977. In 1982, Ortisei became the first peace community. Peace Sunday, a festival that opens at the Peace Memorial, has also been celebrated in Ortisei since 1982.

In June 2001 the Thaddäus-Steinmayr-Friedensweg , named after him, was opened. There are sculptures by artists from different nations along this path.

Steinmayr died on May 1, 2017 at the age of 95.
