coat of arms

On May 30, 2012, he was appointed Coadjutor of Shanghai by the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association . He soon received the approval of Pope Benedict XVI. for his episcopal ordination. However, in the eyes of the Vatican, the Diocese of Shanghai already had a coadjutor in the person of Mons. Jin, so that Ma was considered by the Vatican only as auxiliary bishop in Shanghai. He was ordained a bishop on July 7, 2012 in St. Ignatius Cathedral in Shanghai, in the presence of eighty-five priests and six bishops, including one not recognized by Rome. The latter did not, however, lay his hand on him in ordination.

At the end of the ceremony he said: "From the moment of my ordination [...] it is no longer appropriate for me to be a member of the Patriotic Catholic Association".. The majority of those present responded with applause, while representatives of the Chinese Communist Party and the Patriotic Catholic Association abruptly left the church.

Immediately after the ceremony, Msgr. Ma was placed under house arrest in the seminary in Sheshan and was not allowed to wear official attributes ( miter , crosier , pectoral cross ) or concelebrate mass with other priests. On December 11, 2012, the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association declared him forfeited of his episcopal office.
