features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 35 to 45 millimeters. The basic color of the wing tops is orange brown. In contrast to almost all species of Schiller butterfly, there is no iridescent blue shimmer. A pattern consisting of black spots and bands stands out on the wings. Close to the apex of the forewings, which have a slightly concave outer edge, there is a white spot, under which other very small white spots continue. The underside of the forewing has a faded yellow-gray to yellow-brown tint, from which dark bands and spots stand out. The hind wing underside shows a broad dark brown serrated discal band on a light brown background.
Similar species
The small Schiller butterfly ( Apatura ilia ) in the Rotschiller form f. clytie is easy to distinguish from Thaleropis ionia due to its significantly larger wingspan of 55 to 60 millimeters .
distribution
The distribution area of Thaleropis ionia includes Turkey , the northeast of Iraq , the northwest of Iran , the southwest of Russia , Armenia , Azerbaijan , Georgia and the Caucasus .
Habitat and way of life
Thaleropis ionia lives in areas rich in bushes or in sparse forests with hackberry trees ( Celtis ) or willows ( Salix ), mostly near rivers and streams. The moths hatch between June and September and mate in summer. Only the females overwinter, fly again from March to May and then lay their eggs on willow or hackberry trees. The caterpillars prefer shady places. You are making a web between two sheets of paper.
