The Thalersee or Thaler See is an artificially created lake in Thal in Styria (Austria) not far from the provincial capital Graz .

history

Around 1920 the owner at the time had some of the ponds below the Unterthal Castle , which had been drained since the second half of the 18th century, dammed up again. In the first years after the First World War , the lake was only dammed in autumn in order to extract ice from it, which was stored in the ice cellar by the lake or in the ice cellars of the city of Graz for cooling purposes.

In 1925, Hans von Reininghaus began to develop the lake into a modern lido with an area of 65,000 m² for the time.

In 2014, Holding Graz bought the property around the lake including the restaurant for a total of 1.25 million euros.

On November 7, 2018, the construction of a new cable car system was decided at a press conference in the Graz municipal council. The route should lead about as north as the Peter-Tunner-Gasse over the Plabutsch to Thal near Graz to the Thalersee. The total costs were given as around 35 million euros, with completion in spring 2022. The strongest opposition party KPÖ announced resistance to the project, among other things for reasons of environmental protection, and called for a referendum on this . The end of the gondola lift came in May 2020, but the Thalersee recreational area is to be made more attractive.

In 2018, Holding Graz bought a third of the lake, two thirds belong to the municipality of Thal. Pittino & Otter, Graz won an architecture competition with 53 submissions. After the old one is demolished, a new restaurant is to be built with 200 seats, 100 of which on the terrace and 8 guest rooms. Boat, bike and ice skate rentals are planned. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2021.

today

The Thalersee offers the Grazers numerous opportunities as a recreational area. In addition to the restaurant, a boat rental in summer and an ice skating company in winter. Nearby there are hiking trails, an observatory, a golf course, a cross-country ski run and the Ernst Fuchs Church .
