The Thane Creek is a funnel-shaped bay east of the island Salsette on which the city of Mumbai , the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra is.

history

Although a tributary of the Ulhas River flows into the northern tip of Thane Creek , it is assumed that the bay was formed by plate tectonic or seismic activities. The tide differences in Thane Creek are small, so that the bay, largely protected from wind and waves, was first used by Arab sailors, later by the caravels of the Portuguese and, from 1661, by the British as a natural harbor. In the approximately 10 to 15 km wide estuary of Thane Creek is the ferry terminal of Mumbai with the Gateway of India , built in memory of the visit of George V (1911) in the 1920sand the much-visited Elephanta Island with one of the most imposing Hindu cave temples in India.

Industry etc.

On the west bank of Thane Creek a little further north is the old commercial and industrial port of Mumbai with numerous small and medium-sized quays and dry docks as well as several smaller nuclear research reactors in the Bhabha Atomic Research Center ; the new container port of Nhava Sheva , on the other hand, was located on the east bank of Thane Creek. At the northern tip of the bay is the metropolis of Thane, part of the greater Mumbai area .

Nature reserve

The bank zones in the central part of Thane Creek between the Airoli-Bridge and Vashi-Bridge bridges - connecting the two cities Airoli and Vashi on the east bank with Mumbai - are ecologically still halfway intact and in places lined with mangroves ; A bird sanctuary (especially for flamingos ) of around 17 km² was established here in August 2015 .
