The Abbey, Sutton Courtenay is a medieval courtyard house in Sutton Courtenay in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire ). It is in the Vale of White Horse District near the River Thames , across from a twelfth century Norman hall and manor . The Abbey has been designated by Historic England as having exceptional historical and architectural merit. It is seen as a textbook example of English mansions and is classified as a Grade I monument.

The Abbey has its origins in the 13th century as the rectory of Abingdon Abbey , a Benedictine monastery in the north of Abingdon-on-Thames . Several phases of construction took place during the Middle Ages, carried out by celebrities such as Solomon of Rochester , Thomas Beckington, and William Say , but it wasn't until the 17th century that the current building was completed. It was probably named "The Abbey" during the Victorian Age . From 1495 to 1867, The Abbey was owned by St George's Chapel (Windsor Castle) , who leased the property to John Fettiplace, among others .

After the property was inhabited by Evelyn St. Croix Fleming , it was bought in 1958 by David Astor , who leased it to Ockenden Venture, which provided shelter for refugees and displaced children. In the 1970s, The Abbey was loaned to the exiled Bishop Colin Winter to house the Namibia International Peace Center. The Dalai Lama visited the house in 1973. In 1978 the Astor family sold the house and in 1980 it became the property of the New Era Center, a non-profit organization led by Dr. Fred Blum and Bishop Stephen Verney . The New Era Center used The Abbey as a spiritual retreat and conference center and changed its name to The Abbey, Sutton Courtenay in the 1990s.

The Abbey, Sutton Courtenay is a residential center where a spiritual community offers hospitality to people seeking personal growth, spiritual refreshment and healing. The Abbey also has a program of events for the public in the fields of spirituality, personal development, education, and music and the arts.
