The Barberettes are a South Korean female singing duo from Seoul , which mainly performs pieces in the retro style Doo Wop . The group made their debut in 2012. With their cover versions, they tie in with hits from the 1950s and 1960s.

history

The group started out of a desire to sing in October 2012 when Shinae An Wheeler came up with the idea of starting a girl group inspired by old songs. Wheeler and Grace Kim sang for the same jazz band and the third member - So Hee Park - started taking singing lessons from Wheeler. In November 2015, Grace Kim left the group and was replaced by Sunnie Lee Kyeong. The group's instrumentalists are Sae Ha Lee (piano), Hyun Park (bass) and BA Wheeler (drums), who replaced the original drummer Ji Young Kim and acts in two roles as sound engineer and co-producer. In March 2018, So Hee Park announced that she was leaving the group to broaden her horizons.

Surname

The group chose the name “Barberettes” based on the a cappella singing in the barbershop style. However, since they lacked a fourth member for a barbershop quartet, they added the suffix "-ettes", which many girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s also had.

style

Their music style is based on well-known female singing groups such as The Andrews Sisters , The Chordettes and The Ronettes . Well-known pieces they have covered are Rum and Coca-Cola , Mr. Sandman , Be My Baby . Her repertoire also includes Christmas carols such as Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland , Korean vocal pieces and Valerie , the famous song by the English rock band The Zutons , which was covered by Amy Winehouse .
