The Firm was a British pop band that had a number one hit in Great Britain with the comedy song Star Trekkin ' .

Band history

The Firm began as a one-man project by the British John O'Connor. He had his own recording studio in the 1970s, which he gave up in the early 1980s because he could no longer make music because of the sheer production. As a studio musician, he then played for bands like Maddy Prior and Bucks Fizz .

He also wrote songs, such as the 1982 song Arthur Daley ('e's Alright) about a character from the British TV series Minder . Since he couldn't find a record company for it , but knew enough about the business himself, he published it himself under the name "The Firm". The single reached number 14 in the UK charts in 1982 .

In 1987, together with Graham Lister, he became a catchy tune. As a kind of parody of Star Trek - Starship Enterprise they wrote the song Star Trekkin ' . To the catchy refrain "Star Trekkin 'across the universe" sung in the choir, they kept repeating typical Enterprise sayings such as "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it" to a melody that could come from a nursery rhyme and is also orchestrated that way has been. And all of that with different voices, which sometimes imitated Spock and McCoy, sometimes were squeaky to shrill.

The thoroughly silly number, like the first single, did not find any serious prospects and so they released the track again on O'Connor's label as "The Firm". In the third week after its release, the song was number 1 on the UK charts and became a cult song . The single sold a million times worldwide.

Nevertheless, O'Connor moved to the United States in the same year, where he founded the new age band "Eko" with keyboardist Paul Ellis and violinist Bob Loveday . After four albums between 1989 and 1996, this project ended again.

Most recently, O'Connor mainly made TV music, for example for the series King of the Hill .
