The Great American Cross-Country Road Race is a car racing game published by Activision in 1985 for the Atari home computers such as the Atari 800 and 800XL . A little later, implementations for other home computer systems appeared; In 1988 the company Firebird re-released it as a low budget game in Great Britain . The game was programmed by Alex DeMeo and Kevin Kalkut.

The aim of the game is to reach all cities of the USA given on the overview map within the shortest possible driving time. In addition, three races must be driven, which lead from the west coast to the east coast . Obstacles such as police and radar controls as well as construction sites make things more difficult during a race. In addition, there is a time limit to be observed, with the remaining time at the end of a stage being credited to the next section. In contrast to other car racing games, the player himself determines the start and finish point of the current race to be held. This adds a tactical component to the initially pure reaction game, because on different routes there are different environmental conditions, which in turn influence the driving speed and other parameters.

Due to its depth, the game received mostly good reviews from the contemporary specialist press.
