The 2015/16 season was the 60th season of the Ekstraliga , the highest Polish ice hockey division , and the 81st staging of the Polish ice hockey championship. KS Cracovia became champion for the eleventh time in its club history . As the last of the playout round Naprzód Janów had to relegate to the I league .

mode

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 22 games. The best six teams in the main round played the order for the first six places in the playoffs in a quadruple round (20 games for each team). The teams in places seven to twelve also competed against each other four times and played two other playoff participants and the participants in the playouts. The main round results were adopted in each case.

In the playoffs , the quarter-finals were played in the " Best of Five " mode , the semi-finals and the final in the "Best of Seven" mode. The two losers in the semi-finals played third place in the “Best of Three” mode. Each team received three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after overtime or shootout , one point for a defeat after overtime or shootout and zero points for a defeat after regular time.

The teams in places nine to eleven played out the relegated team in a playout round in which each team played four times against the other two teams. The team of the youth academy of the Polish association Szkoła Mistrzostwa Sportowego did not have to take part in this elimination round - although the last one.

particularities

With twelve teams, the Ekstraliga comprised the highest number since the 1998/99 season , when 14 teams took part. For the first time since that season, a team from the youth academy of the Polish association Szkoła Mistrzostwa Sportowego from Sosnowiec was there. In addition, their local competitor Zagłębie Sosnowiec and Nesta Toruń (both for the first time since 2013) were new. The latter is the only club that does not come from the south of Poland, but from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship .
