The 1955/56 season was the 1st season of the Ekstraliga , the highest Polish ice hockey division , and the 21st edition of the Polish ice hockey championship. Legia Warszawa became champions for the seventh time in the club's history . Gwardia Bydgoszcz and Gwardia Katowice were relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the eight teams played a total of 14 games. The first place in the main round was champion. The last two placed were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
