The 1971/72 season was the 37th season of the Polish Ice Hockey League , the highest Polish ice hockey division . Podhale Nowy Targ became champions for the fourth time in the club's history . Zagłębie Sosnowiec and Unia Oświęcim were relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the eleven teams played a total of 40 games. The first place in the main round was champion. The last two in the main round were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
