The handle (English for the handle ) is an elongated solid in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the northwestern part of the Royal Society Range , it rises 2.5 km southwest of Table Mountain .
Alan Sherwood, head of the New Zealand Geological Survey campaign, which ran from 1987 to 1988 , gave the massif its descriptive name. In its size and relative geographical position to a neighboring mountain ridge , the massif is reminiscent of the handle of a sickle .
