The Howff is a cemetery in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1963 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A Franciscan monastery has been located on the site since the Middle Ages . After the Scottish Reformation and the secularization of the monasteries, Queen Maria Stuart made the former monastery courtyard available for use as a cemetery in 1564. The grave monuments date from between the 16th and 19th centuries. The blind arcade was added in 1601. The wall along the north flank was rebuilt in 1828 by David Neave . The west gate was designed in 1833 from a design by James Black .

The cemetery occupies a square between Meadowside , Barrack Street , Bank Street and Reform Street in central Dundee. The high enclosure wall consists of quarry stone or sandstone blocks on the west flank. The possibly once open blind arcade is decorated with sculptured capitals . The tall, double-leaf cast iron portal is along Barrack Street on the west flank. The collection of richly ornamented grave monuments from several centuries in Scotland only lags behind Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh .
