The Independent , also known as The Sunday Independent , was an Australian weekly newspaper published in Perth , Western Australia from 1969 until it was disbanded in 1986. The owners were the iron ore magnates Lang Hancock and Peter Wright.

The newspaper was founded on April 27, 1969 as the Sunday newspaper. The first editor was Maxwell Newton.

In the beginning the circulation was 70,000 copies, but The Independent could never seriously endanger the supremacy of the competing The Sunday Times .

In 1973, as The Independent Sun, it was a daily newspaper in direct competition with The West Australian for four weeks .

The owners of the Sunday Times , News Corporation , acquired The Independent in 1984 and removed it from the market in May 1986.
