The Man Comes Around
The Man Comes Around is a country song by Johnny Cash that appeared on his 2002 album American IV: The Man Comes Around . It is about the Last Judgment and the return of Jesus Christ and is one of the last pieces that Cash wrote.
content
The song begins with three lines from the Revelation of John with reference to the first of the apocalyptic horsemen . The following text has numerous references to the Bible, such as the appearance of a thunderous voice. In the Bible, the voice of God is often described as “loud thunder”. Cash later also pointed out that God's voice was also present as the trumpet sounds.
In the first few lines of text, Cash paints a picture of a man who walks around and notes down the names of those whom he frees or censures. Furthermore, the chorus says that the "Alpha and Omega" kingdom has come. Cash writes that countless people make pilgrimages to the chapel, hundreds of millions of angels sing, trumpets sound, voices scream and cry and people die and are born. It is later said that the unrighteous, the righteous and the filthy should continue to be unjust, righteous and filthy; those who want to be saved should only "listen to those words that were written long ago."
The song ends as it began. Cash reads from the Revelation of John again. This excerpt is about the fourth horseman, death , followed by hell .
Emergence
Cash said that no song he has ever written took up as much of his time as this one. The piece goes back to a dream he had in the 1990s. In it he met the Queen of England , who compared him to a thorn bush in a whirlwind . Cash was sure to have heard the phrase before and found it later in Job's book . Cash said he wrote 40 to 50 stanzas that weren't used on the song.
