history

In 1976, the then communications minister, Jeanne Sauvé, announced the establishment of pay TV for Canada. During the 1970s, when premium television was slowly being rolled out across North America through HBO and the resulting television station WTBS , these stations were only available via satellite in rural areas. These people therefore demanded an expansion of the technology to make it easier to receive. The provincial government of Saskatchewan and Cable Regina founded a provincial pay-TV network, Teletheatre, in 1979.

Due to the rapid increase in satellite reception systems in order to be able to receive these premium channels, the government of Pierre Trudeau decided to introduce a nationwide pay TV offer that can be received via cable networks. However, this presupposed that the pay-TV broadcasters need broadcasting licenses in order to legally broadcast their offer. A license was granted by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on March 18, 1982 to First Choice later known as The Movie Network . The station began broadcasting on February 1, 1983. The first film to be broadcast on the station was For Your Eyes Only .
