The Public Pays is a 1936 American crime film that was released as a short film . The script is based on a story by screenwriter John C. Higgins.
action
The con man Moran and his cronies found the Creamery Betterment Association . They are forcing dairy operators to join the company in order to control the dairy market. The bottle of milk should cost three cents, of which one cent should go to society. Moran wants to ensure that the entire three cents are paid to society. The producers who do not want to join are put under so much pressure that they see no other option but to join.
The higher price also has an impact on buyers. Some can no longer afford the product. One of the producers who has so far successfully fought against society is Mr. Paige. Now Moran is targeting the dairy owner's family as leverage. In order to take action, the police need solid evidence. Paige is persuaded to keep up the pressure so that evidence can be gathered against Moran.

In 1937 the film won an Oscar in the Best Short Film (Two-Reel) category .
