The Pyramid (Moriori: Tarakoikoia , dt "The Pyramid.") Is an uninhabited rocky island in the archipelago of to New Zealand belonging Chatham Islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean .

geography

The Pyramid is located 11 km south of Pitt Island and about 60 km southeast of the main island of Chatham Island and thus represents the southernmost land mass of the Chatham Islands. The approximately 400 m long island rises steeply out of the ocean, similar to a pyramid, and reaches one Height of 173 m above sea level.

fauna

The remote island is an important breeding ground for seabirds , particularly the Chatham albatross ( Thalassarche eremita , also known as Chatham Mollymawk ), which is endemic to The Pyramid and is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to the small size of the habitat .
