The Quakes is a psychobilly band from the USA founded in 1986 by Paul Roman, Rob Peltier and Dave "The Ace" Hoy .
history
1980-1990
The Quakes were founded in 1986 in Buffalo , USA by Paul Roman, Rob Peltier and Dave "The Ace" Hoy. In the beginning, the band with their neo- rockabilly style attracted little attention, so they began to add more and more punk elements to their style. Just as her style of music changed, so did her style of dress. The rockabilly clothes, pegged pants and bowling shirts turned into ripped jeans and spinger boots. From that point on, The Quakes were a psychobilly band.
In the fall of 1987, The Quakes left the United States and went to London . Back then, London was the center of the psychobilly scene. When returning from their first major gig at a Psychobilly festival in Weize Belgium , the band was refused entry to Great Britain by customs . The reason was a lack of a work permit. The Quakes toured through Belgium and Germany as support for Coffin Nails. Towards the end of 1988 they signed their first record deal with the Nervous Records label.
The band was now back in London when they released their first album of the same name, The Quakes , in 1988 . After performing around London in the summer of 1988, Dave "The Ace" Hoy returned to Buffalo where he was killed in a tragic car accident shortly after, before his 18th birthday.
Chris Van Cleve, who had already played with Paul Roman in an earlier band, took the place as drummer in autumn 1989. In this line-up they were also at the first and second Big Rumble Festival in London.
1990-2000
In 1990 the Quakes released their second album, Voice of America . The Quakes moved musically, through the blurring of the border to psychobilly, a bit back in the direction of rockabilly. At that time, Brian Doran became the new drummer, replacing Chris Van Cleve. In 1991 Chris Van Cleve came back to the band. With a new and old line-up, the band began touring Europe. At one of these gigs the band was observed by Sony / Japan and was able to land a new record deal. Her third album, New Generation, was recorded in Japan in 1992 and released in 1993 by Sony / Japan. A tour followed with 13 appearances in Japan.
With their fourth album Quiff Rock in 1995, The Quakes went back to their roots after New Generation . Gigs in Europe followed, but the psychobilly scene in Europe had shrunk a lot towards the end of the 1990s and so these gigs were mainly at festivals.
2000-2014
During the heyday of the psychobilly scene in Europe, this style of music was little or no known in the USA . This changed at the beginning of the year 2000. The Big Rumble Festival, now under the new name, took place as American Rumble in London, USA . The Quakes performed again here. A year later, in 2001, the band recorded their fifth studio album, Last of the Human Beings . The album was released on Orrexx Records, Paul Roman's new label.
In February 2004 Paul Roman went to Finland and founded a new band called The Paul Roman 3 as a side project . With her he mainly played old and new The Quakes songs and then gave a tour with 25 appearances in Europe. The Quakes released their sixth album in 2005 with Psyops . A year later the band celebrated their 20th anniversary. At this time Rob Peltier left the band and could initially only be replaced by changing musicians. This only changed in 2007 when Kenny Hill joined the band as a new permanent bassist.
In 2008 there was another change within the band. Juan Carlos came as the new drummer. In the same year the band headlined the Psychomania Festival in Potsdam . After a few shows, Negative Charge was released in 2009 . A year later the band went to Brazil for the first time . There she gave a TV and a radio interview and received an article in Rollingstone / Brazil.
In 2012, Wes Hinshaw, a new bass player, joined the Quakes, replacing Kenny Hill. Her album Planet Obscure was released in 2012.
