The quests

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quests was a pop band from Singapore in the 1960s . With their first single Shanty , they were the first Singaporean band to top the national charts .

Founded in 1961 as a school band, The Quest initially played cover versions of artists such as Cliff Richard or the Shadows . The four students made their first appearance for a fee of $ 20 with borrowed instruments and amplifiers. After some line-up changes, they released their first single in 1964 with the record company EMI . Shanty pushed The Beatles' I Should Have Known Better off the top of the charts and stayed there for twelve weeks. Shanty was the first record by a Singaporean band to top the national charts. In the mid-1960s, The Quest was the most popular band in the region. During tours in the Philippines or Brunei there were sometimes riots, fans "tore the little ones off the musicians". In 1970 the band, in which only two members of the original line-up played, disbanded.
