history
Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry met in preschool through their relative parents. Both discovered their interest in music at an early age, Barry wrote his first song at the age of eight, while Greenwich began writing in her junior high school years . In 1959, Barry became a professional songwriter at New York music publisher EB Marks Publishers. There he wrote his first successful title Tell Laura I Love Her . He and Greenwich, having previously separated, reunited at a Thanksgiving party in 1959 , and although Barry was married, they were both dating. After Barry's marriage was divorced in late 1960, they made their relationship public and began working together professionally. They finally got married on October 28, 1963.
Even before their wedding, they released their first joint record as "The Raindrops", which was released in March 1963 by the New York record company Jubilee Records . On the A side of the single , the title What a Guy was written by both appeared . This reached the Hot 100 of the music magazine Billbord a month later , where it finally rose to number 41. In addition, he came in the rhythm and blues charts on the 25th place. The Raindrops achieved the best Hot 100 rating with the title of their second single The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget , which rose to 17th place. This song, like the following recordings, was again written by Greenwich and Barry together. By 1965 the Raindrops were able to place themselves in the Hot 100 a total of five times, the best R&B success they had with the song Book of Love , which reached 13th place in this category. In November 1963 Jubilee published a music album with the Raindrops, on which they sang the self-written title Da Doo Ron Ron , which had become a million seller a few months earlier with the Crystals .
In addition to their record productions, Greenwich and Barry continued to have success as songwriters. In 1963 they wrote the title Do Wah Diddy Diddy , which became a world hit in the version of the British group Manfred Mann . Their song Leader of the Pack , which they wrote for the Shangri-Las , also became a number one hit in the USA in 1964.
In 1965 Greenwich and Barry divorced and ended their recording career with their fifth single. Nonetheless, they continued to write songs together, although not as intensely as before. They wrote more Hot 100 hits for the Shangri-Las, as well as for the Drifters . They later formed a team of authors with Phil Spector that created the top 10 hits Baby I Love You with Andy Kim and Take Me Home Tonight with Eddie Money . In 1991, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame brought Greenwich and Barry together again in public.
