The retreat

The Retreat is a hunting lodge near the Scottish town of Preston in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The castle was probably built around 1780 for Francis Wemyss Charteris, 7th Earl of Wemyss . It served primarily as a hunting lodge, but was also used as a country seat at times. Over the centuries, The Retreat has been modernized several times, with the former symmetry of the complex being lost.

description

The Retreat is isolated on the left bank of Whiteadder Waters about four kilometers northwest of Preston. The heart of The Retreat is a round building designed in neo-Gothic style. The pointed arched windows with sandstone frames of the two-story building are arranged on eight axes. The two-winged entrance portal on the northeast side closes with a combat window in the Tudor arch . The facades are plastered with Harl . A one-storey extension was added on the southeast side, which connects the main building with a formerly free-standing outer building. This has a T-shaped floor plan and is partially designed with pointed arched windows. The free-standing building on the northwest side is largely identical in design. With the exception of a wing of the north-western building that is covered with corrugated iron, the concluding hip roofs , or the conical roof of the main building, are covered with slate.
