The Rivieras is the name of an American vocal quartet that released records in the Doo Wop musical style in the 1950s and 1960s .

history

The four singers Homer Dunn (lead singer), Ronald Cook (tenor), Andrew Jones (baritone) and Charles Allen (bass) from Englewood (New Jersey) founded a singing group called "The Four Arts" in the early 1950s. Without the help of a manager, they initially only performed pop songs in a wider area around their home. In 1956, music manager and producer Warren Lanier took on the quartet, which on his advice renamed itself "El-Rivieras". Their fame continued to be limited at the local level until the manager of the pop music quartet The Ames Brothers , William Fix, became aware of the Englewooder singers. He made contact with the newly founded record company Coed Records , which the group signed. Under the slightly modified name "The Rivieras", the first single with the four singers was produced in July 1958 with catalog number 503 . Your A-side title Count Every Star immediately reached the Hot 100 music magazine Billbord where he rose to the place 73rd Originally, the song was a hit for Ray Anthony in 1950 . Six months later, the group, now popularized by Dick Clark in his TV show American Bandstand , had their greatest record success with the Glen Miller song Moonlight Serenade , which reached number 47 on the Hot 100. At the beginning of 1960, the Rivieras had their last Hot 100 listing with Since I Made You Cry , but did not get beyond number 93. Since the following records were no longer successful, Coed ended his collaboration with the Rivieras in the course of 1961. In 1964 the record company brought out a late comer record with two earlier published titles. After that, the Rivieras' recording career was practically over. Only in the second half of the 1960s did the re-release label Lost-Nite publish six more singles with old Rivieras titles. Also at the end of the 1960s, a music album with twelve previous Rivieras titles was released on the Lost label .

In 1963 a surf rock band was founded in South Bend (Indiana) , which from 1964 also released records under the name The Rivieras. However, it was composed differently.
