The Room Tribute , also called The Room , is an unofficial computer game based on the US feature film The Room by Tommy Wiseau . The game was released on September 3, 2010 on the Newgrounds website and was programmed by Tom Fulp. The design is in the 16-bit style.

Gameplay

The Room is an adventure game with point-and-click controls. The player takes on the role of Johnny, a banker from San Francisco , and goes through his everyday life. The game is divided into several levels, each of which represents a new day in Johnny's life. Each level starts with Johnny waking up and taking a shower and ends with Johnny going to bed. In the meantime, the player controls Johnny through his everyday life, which consists of various activities such as playing football , meeting friends, drinking coffee or going to work. If you are not currently on a mission, the player is able to freely explore the game world based in San Francisco with Johnny. There are also various sidequests such as B. looking for spoons hidden in the game world.

action

For the most part, the game copies the plot of the feature film. Johnny helps his many friends with their problems and experiences everyday situations as he prepares for his wedding to his future wife Lisa. However, when Johnny finds out that Lisa is cheating on him with his best friend Mark, he commits suicide . The game deviates slightly from the original film in that it runs completely from the point of view of Johnny, i.e. parts of the plot that are only mentioned in the film actually shows, e.g. B. Johnny's job at the bank or transferring a drug dealer to the police . The video game also includes some inside jokes that try to explain the unanswered plot questions in the film, such as the unexplained disappearance of a main character.

The game begins with a prologue in which Lisa and Denny stand at Johnny's grave in the form of a statue of Tommy Wiseau and mourn his death. In the next scene, the real action of the game begins the day before the movie starts when Johnny discovers that an earthquake has cut San Francisco off from the rest of the state.

Johnny then relives the entire storyline to the point where he commits suicide. Then the player can watch Johnny rise from his grave in the direction of space and land there in a spoon-shaped spaceship, making it clear that he is an alien . Once there, he talks to two other aliens, who also have the naked form of Tommy Wiseau, about the fact that he will never understand the people and their customs. Then all three Johnnys start dancing and the game ends.

If the player has found all the hidden spoons in the game, the three aliens do not dance, but fire a laser at the earth, transforming it into a large spoon.

criticism

Entertainment Weekly referred to the game as "as addictive as scotchka!" (A parody of a scotch and vodka drink that is drunk in the movie The Room ). The game received further positive reviews from Time , Wired , Destructiod and The Escapist.
