The Rubinoos are an American power pop band , best known in the 1970s .

Band history

As school friends to Beserkley

The two school friends Jon Rubin (vocals, guitar) and Tommy Dunbar (guitar, keyboard, vocals) founded the band in 1973 in Berkeley (California) with Royse Adler ( bass ) and Donn Spindt (drums), but the band had to wait until 1975 before they got married they got a record deal with the record company Beserkley Records .

Their first release was in 1975 on the album "Beserkley Chartbusters, Volume 1" , a long-playing record whose title was a marketing gag. It was the first LP on the Beserkley label and consisted of songs that hadn't even come close to the charts; some were even recorded especially for the LP. Next to Earth Quake , Greg Kihn and Jonathan Richman, the Rubinoos were represented with the song "Gorilla" , which was later released as a single .

Success in USA and Europe

The Rubinoos' first commercially successful single was a cover version of the '67 hit " I Think We're Alone Now " by Tommy James . It hit the US charts and was the first success for the independent label. In the same year the first self-titled LP was released , which received good reviews, but was a commercial failure. The band also promoted their hit in Europe, including playing on March 14, 1978 in Hamburg's Audimax in front of the cameras at the Rockpalast .

Her second LP was released in 1979 and sold more than 100,000 copies in the US before it went broke. The album contained a cover version of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" (originally by the Ramones in 1976 ). This was quite successful as a single in Great Britain in the airplay charts, but without entering the sales hit parade. Nevertheless, the success was enough to be signed as the opening act for the US dates of Elvis Costello's Armed Forces tour.

Comebacks and present

The following year the band broke up. In 1983 Rubin and Dunbar returned to the music scene and worked on a few pieces with producer Todd Rundgren . In 1989 Tommy Dunbar formed a new band (" Vox Pop "). An album by this group was released in 1998 on Sandbox Records. At the beginning of the 90s, two compilations with unreleased titles by Rubinous appeared before a completely new album (“ Paleophonic ”) with the original line-up was released in 2000 . The record was originally only released for the group's fan club, but the band then headlined a festival and sales of the album took off.

In 2002 a record was released exclusively with cover versions, e.g. B. "Shake Some Action" by Flamin 'Groovies or "Heroes And Villains" by The Beach Boys and "Bend Me Shape Me" by Amen Corner . In 2004 a live album of older recordings was released before a completely new album was released in 2005.

The band now consists of Gary Phillips (guitar, accordion, vocals, keyboards and producer), Al Chan (bass, vocals), Nick D'Virgilio (percussion, drums, vocals), Jon Rubin (guitar, vocals), Kit Potamkin ( Keyboard) and Tommy Dunbar (guitar, keyboard, vocals).
