action

The content of the fifth collection is very closely related to both the second collection Das Puppenhaus and the ninth collection Die Gütigen . The main character of these volumes is Barbie, whose appearance corresponds to the doll of the same name and who lived with Rose Walker as a dream vortex in the same apartment building during her time (see The Doll's House ).

Gaiman often remarked that the Sandman collections had some sort of gender affiliation because each collection had a distinctly male or female character. A Game of You has the most female characters and the most female fans.

The action takes place partly within a modern New York apartment building , which is inhabited by Barbie and her best friend, a transsexual named Wanda, the lesbian couple Foxglove and Hazel, a witch named Thessaly and a quiet man named George. George is an envoy from the other main site of the plot. This place is part of the dreamland that Barbie created in her youth and equipped it with living versions of her stuffed animals. This dream world initially appears as a collection of fantasy clichés.

As the story progresses, the line between reality and dream fades until, as is often the case with Gaiman, it disappears. And for Barbie, comatose in George's New York apartment, her dream becomes real and life-threatening. The dream world is threatened by the "cuckoo", who in the end turns out to be a younger dream version of Barbie herself. Thessaly murders George pulls his face off and hangs it on the wall so that he can continue to speak to him. Followed by Foxglove and Hazel, who want to save their friend, she invades Barbie's dream to get revenge on the cuckoo. It turns out that she is a witch who traces her thousands of years of life back to the careful cultivation of thoughts of revenge. In ancient times, Thessaly was considered the land of magic and demonic women.

The cuckoo tries to destroy its nest, Barbie's dream world, in order to “learn to fly”, that is to penetrate the waking world. In the end, Morpheus appears and ends the conflict by resolving this part of the dream world.

At the same time, a storm is raging over New York in the real world, causing the apartment building to collapse, killing Wanda. Barbie travels deep into the Midwest for her funeral , where Wanda was born as Alvin. She uses her lipstick to correct the name on Alvin zu Wanda's tombstone.
